Many students are perfectly comfortable learning in classroom-style group settings, deriving meaningful benefit from interacting with their peers and finding their learning expanded by others' questions and comments. Other students, however, know that they do not perform at their best in a group setting. They worry about not grasping information as quickly as other students, fearing that they are holding the group back or alternatively, they find themselves frustrated when they have mastered something but cannot move on until the rest of the group has caught on. If you find learning complex information in a group more distracting than helpful and know you retain important concepts best through one-on-one instruction, consider working with one of our world-class tutors at Manhattan Review.

There is no question the SAT can provoke a significant amount of anxiety, given the importance undergraduate programs place on standardized tests scores, and students need to take advantage of every resource available to them. When taking the SAT, it is not enough to simply be confident in your knowledge of the test content…you also need to be confident in your test-taking skills, including identifying the particular type of question you are facing, selecting the most effective strategy for arriving at the correct, or best, answer, and pacing yourself in order to manage your time over the course of this lengthy exam.

The SAT is composed of two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section has a possible range of scores from 200 to 800. Based on accumulated statistics, the average SAT scores for the top twenty universities in the United States are as follows: 711 to 768 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 740 to 797 for Math, and 1450 to 1554 for total SAT score. While these are merely guidelines and every college or university will vary, the importance of exceptionally high SAT scores cannot be underestimated. In order to be competitive for the most respected institutions of higher education, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the SAT.

Meet a Berkeley SAT Tutor: Derrick R.

Derrick R. grew up in Quebec and moved to Salt Lake City at a young age. "I was so sad to leave my grandparents and my friends," he recalls, "and one of the ways I coped with such a big change was through art." Derrick discovered a love of drawing and painting at an early age, and he derived great enjoyment from creating his own comic books as a child, telling stories through colorful artwork and imagining a variety of characters each with a different backstory. "I found so much comfort in a pencil and a blank piece of paper," he shares. "I was incredibly shy and it was tough getting to know new people, but my parents signed me up for art classes shortly after we moved, and it was easier making friends when I connected with them through a medium I loved." As he grew older, Derrick began using various graphic design programs on his computer, although he never outgrew his love of drawing and illustrating by hand. "Using a computer just opened up so many new options," he explained. "It was incredible to see things come to life when before, they'd only existed in my mind."

Derrick dreamed of becoming of a professional illustrator and artist and set his sights on attending the Pratt Institute in New York, a respected leader in all forms of artwork. "I knew getting in to such a prestigious program would be like getting into Harvard or Yale, so I was willing to accept all the help I could get," he recalls. "One of the best ways to make my application stand out—and to qualify for scholarships—was to do well on the SAT, so I made that my goal." Derrick worked with a private tutor, learning how to approach test questions and select the most effective strategy for arriving at the best answer. He took countless practice tests, familiarizing himself with time management and pacing skills, as well as the content he would be expected to know. "After working with my tutor, I knew I was much more prepared than I ever could have been on my own, and on the day of the real test, I didn't panic or feel overwhelmed…I knew I could do well, and I wasn't surprised by anything." Derrick's hard work and diligence paid off, and he obtained a near-perfect SAT score, earning himself a place at the Pratt Institute, as well as numerous financial aid awards.

Derrick continued to live in New York City after graduating from the Pratt Institute, and in addition to accepting a job with a graphic design company, he also accepted a position teaching art in a local after-school program. "I loved connecting with students, and I hadn't expected to find myself so inspired by the things they came up with." Derrick went on to obtain a master's in education from New York University, and when his wife was offered the chance to transfer within her company to Berkeley, he couldn't wait to find new ways to continue supporting students. Derrick continued working with graphic design clients, and he also began accepting freelance work with local design companies and completing illustrations for an established film company in the Bay Area. When a position opened up for an SAT tutor at the Berkeley office of Manhattan Review, Derrick applied and was quickly brought on board. His students appreciate his sense of humor, as well as his sharp eye for details. When he isn't helping future college students master the SAT, Derrick can be found skateboarding, volunteering at the local animal rescue shelter, and taking beginner photography classes with his wife.
