Meet an Ann Arbor TOEFL Tutor: Claudine H.

Claudine finished her undergrad from Michigan State University with a B.A. in Spanish and International Economics after already gaining some tutoring experience during her time there. Her strong grasp of language arts stills, contagious sense of humor and solid teaching skills made tutoring an obvious role for her. Her fellow students noticed quickly in study sessions that Claudine had a knack for language, and her Spanish study group soon grew until she had to schedule private sessions. She didn't mind though, she loved helping others learn Spanish.

In fact, as part of her undergraduate program, Claudine went overseas to teach English as a second language to a family in Spain. She was a live-in tutor for a semester with a family who had two high school boys needing helping English. Soon, with Claudine's help, they both boosted their grades, bringing home all A's! Their parents where delighted and Claudine felt satisfied knowing she had helped these young boys succeed. She credits her highly competitive TOEFL score for helping her realize her love of dabbling in foreign languages. From her time studying Latin, Claudine learned that all Romance languages are derived from Latin and since she was fluent in French and Spanish, she can effectively 'guess' the meanings of numerous English-language derivatives as well. Her immense knowledge of language helps Claudine effectively communicate with her class as well as expand her vocabularies.

From her time spent in Spain, she became a fan of many foreign films. Outside of class, she attends film festivals and is a serious movie buff. Her favorite foreign films are "Amelie" and "The Motorcycle Diaries" which she references often.
