Meet a Minneapolis TOEFL Tutor: Claudine H.

Graduating from Minnesota State University with a B.A. in International Economics and Spanish, Claudine already had a long list of tutoring gigs before choosing to work for Manhattan Review full-time. Her unique ability to grasp different languages, her contagious sense of humor and solid teaching skills made tutoring an obvious role for her. During her undergraduate program, Claudine traveled overseas to teach English. Once in Spain, she met and lived with the family where she would be tutoring their two high school boys. She taught them English and soon their grades were soaring. She helped them in other subjects as well helping them to bring home all A's, much to their parents' delight!

Claudine says her highly competitive TOEFL scores were a result of her love of dabbling in foreign languages. She knows all Romance languages are derived from Latin, and therefore, by being fluent in French and Spanish, she can make an educated "guess" to the meanings of innumerable English-language derivatives as well. It is like reversing how she learned the Romance languages so those learning to master the English language can do the same. Her versatile knowledge of language helps Claudine expand her vocabularies in multiple languages she can effectively communicate with her classes.

In fact, her love of languages always extends into their cultures. She is a fine chef and tries to learn main dishes and delicacies in each country whose language she is learning. She is quite willing to share her dishes and the history behind them, as long as someone else is willing to do the dishes.
