Working directly with a skilled tutor and following a customized program of study can help you better grasp the complexities of the ACT while accelerating your learning and understanding of tried-and-true test-taking strategies. In addition to improving your knowledge and your ability to pace yourself over this lengthy exam, working with a private tutor can also help you gain a better understanding of your learning style, identifying those areas you already excel in while also helping you overcome any weaknesses that might negatively impact your ACT performance.

The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. The English section requires a student to revise and edit a provided text; in addition, short essays in various genres offer rhetorical situations that must be considered before appropriate responses are selected. The mathematics section of the ACT assesses a student's knowledge of basic formulas and computational skills. The reading section is designed to measure a student's ability to closely read a passage, engage in logical reasoning about the passage using evidence, and combine information from multiple sources to produce specific answers. Skills such as locating and interpreting details, understanding the sequence of events, determining the meaning of context-dependent words, and analyzing claims and arguments are all assessed.

The science section of the ACT measures skills required to understand and work in the natural sciences, including interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving, to name a few. The score range for each of the four required tests is 1 to 36. A composite score is created by taking the average of the four test scores and rounding it to the nearest whole number. In general, a "good" ACT score is any score falling at or above the 75th percentile, which equates to a composite score of 24. It must be stated that a "good" score is not nearly strong enough to gain admittance into a leading college or university, and among the most selective institutions of higher education, incoming students routinely obtain a composite score in the range of 33 to 35. In order to be considered a competitive applicant among the leading colleges, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the ACT.

It is never too soon to start preparing for the ACT, given the role this exam plays in college applications, as well as college acceptance offers. Meet a Beijing ACT Tutor: Jessica D.

Jessica grew up in Wisconsin and credits the long winters for sparking her love of science. "There are only so many books you can read or shows you can watch, and after months of snow, you start going a little stir-crazy," laughs Jessica. "That's what led my grandma to get me a book about at-home science experiments." Growing up with her grandparents, Jessica appreciated how they always supported her love of learning, in addition to how patient they were. "I tried so many crazy experiments, many of which ended up on the kitchen walls or ceiling, and my grandparents never got mad. They were always like, ‘Well, we know one more thing that doesn't work,'" smiles Jessica. Jessica loved trying new experiments and soon moved to developing her own studies for science fairs, as well as participating in the Chemistry club at her high school and writing a science-themed column for her school newspaper. "My school didn't have an official peer tutoring program, but I definitely helped my friends out when they needed to prepare for a bio exam or complete an astronomy project," recalls Jessica. "In exchange, they helped me with my English papers, since writing has always been more confusing to me than chemistry."

Jessica dreamed of becoming a science educator and knew she would perform better on the ACT than the SAT, thanks to the inclusion of a science section on the ACT. Jessica's grandparents had a friend who was a retired teacher and tutor, and she met with Jessica twice a week to help her prepare for the ACT. Jessica credits tutoring with playing a significant role in her stellar ACT score, and when this score was combined with her impressive high school grades and involvement in extracurricular activities, Jessica was offered admission and financial assistance at numerous colleges and universities. While it meant moving away from her beloved family, Jessica ultimately chose to study at Harvard University, double majoring in biochemistry and education. After graduating from Harvard, Jessica completed a master's in education at the University of Pennsylvania before accepting a position as a science teacher at a high school in Philadelphia.

Jessica loved working in-person with students, but after a few years of teaching in the public school system, she was offered an opportunity by an educational consulting company to provide remote instruction to students around the world, creating and teaching science-related courses and workshops for international high school students. While Jessica worried she might miss being in the same physical location as her students, she immediately took to virtual instruction and quickly came to see it as a way to assist more students eager to improve their knowledge of science. When the educational consulting company she worked for later mentioned an open position for an English-speaking science teacher at an international school in Beijing, Jessica leaped at the chance and moved overseas, ready for another academic adventure. Two years later, Manhattan Review experienced a rare opening for an ACT instructor, and Jessica applied, thinking back to how helpful her own tutoring experiences had been. Jessica joined the Manhattan Review Beijing team in 2018, and students regularly request to work with her to prepare for the ACT, appreciating her insightful test-taking tips, as well as her ability to make questions seem less intimidating. When she isn't helping future college students excel on the ACT, Jessica enjoys attending symphonies and music festivals, going to the movies with her friends, and learning to crochet in anticipation of someday creating her own hats and sweaters.
