Beijing is an internationally famous city where traditional Chinese culture intersects with modern living. Striving to respect the past while appreciating advances towards the future, Beijing is a leading center for culture, finance, business, diplomacy, education, and tourism, to name but a few thriving industries in this megacity. Here you can find the headquarters for most of China's largest state-owned companies, and the city houses the largest number of Fortune Global 500 companies in the world. The Beijing Capital International Airport is the busiest airport in Asia and the second busiest by passenger traffic in the world. A second international airport, the Beijing Daxing International Airport, boasts the distinction of being the largest single-structure airport terminal in the world. Since 2016, the city's subway network has held the position of being the busiest and longest underground transportation system in the world.
Seeking to balance old and new while combining the best of the past with dreams for the future, Beijing is one of the oldest cities on the planet, with an exciting and impressive history dating back more than three millennia. The last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, the inland city of Beijing is bordered by mountains on three sides, as well as old inner and outer city walls. One of the most visited and important tourist destinations in the world, Beijing is truly a sight to behold, filled with opulent and elegant palaces, temples, tombs, parks, and gardens. Seven UNESCO World Heritage sites are located in Beijing, including the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Ming Tombs, Summer Palace, Zhoukoudian, and parts of the Grand Canal and the world-famous Great Wall. Tourists flock to see these wonders for themselves while marveling at the city's traditional housing style of siheyuans as much as the hutongs, or narrow alleys between the historical dwellings.
The Beijing Central Business District, or CBD, is the center of Beijing's economic expansion, dazzling the eye with towering skyscrapers, with more impressive construction of cutting-edge architectural designs to come. Currently undergoing massive development, the CBD is home to more than 60 percent of international companies, including more than 115 Fortune 500 companies specializing in financial, information technology, consulting, media, and service industries.
The public universities in Beijing are truly exceptional and consistently rank among the best in both Asia and the world. More than one-fifth of the universities are listed as Double First-Class Universities, a tertiary education development initiative created by the central government in 2015 with the goal of developing world-class centers of learning by the end of 2050. Tsinghua University and Peking University, both public research universities, are internationally respected and have produced notable and famous leaders in the areas of science, engineering, politics, business, and academia. The Zhongguancun area of the city is at the forefront of both scientific and technological innovation, thanks to strong entrepreneurship. Since 2016, Beijing has held the honored position of the city with the largest scientific research output as determined by the Nature Index. With more than 90 public colleges and universities, education is clearly valued in Beijing, and the city is the seat of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, regularly ranked as the number one research institute in the world since its founding in 2014. In 2018, students in Beijing outperformed students from 78 other countries in math, reading, and science based on results from the Program for International Student Assessment.
Those who are native to urban Beijing speak the Beijing dialect, part of the Mandarin subdivision of spoken Chinese. Rural areas of the Beijing municipality speak their own dialects similar to those of the Hebei province, which surrounds the city. The local style of cooking provides endless opportunities for culinary delights, with the cuisine often being described as a combination of Shandong, Halal, and imperial dishes. Peking duck, Jiazoi (Chinese dumplings), shredded pork in Beijing sauce, Gangou potatoes, and Zhajiang mian (noodles with soybean paste) are just a few of the delectable dishes waiting to be enjoyed. Beijing dishes tend to be salty, fresh, and tender, with distinct thick sauces. One particularly common cooking method is "Bao," which involves quick frying ingredients, typically in hot oil, soup, or sauce.
Those looking for entertainment are certain to be inundated with enjoyable options. Beijing opera, also known as Peking opera, is considered one of the highest achievements of Chinese culture and is a traditional form of theater well known throughout the nation. This combination of song, dialogue, and action sequences involves gestures, fighting, and even acrobatics. Tourists and locals alike can enjoy the cloisonne metalworking technique, a traditional Beijing artistic specialty involving elaborate processes such as base-hammering, soldering, enamel-working, and gilding. Lacquerware is also revered for the intricate and complicated surface patterns and carvings. More recently, younger residents of Beijing have expressed great interest in nightlife, with Houhai, Sanlitun, and Wudaokou being the most popular late-night hotspots.
Manhattan Review has helped a wide variety of Beijing students pursue their individual academic goals: attending graduate school via the GMAT and GRE, college via the SAT and ACT, law school via the LSAT, and learning the English language via the TOEFL and IELTS. Students have paired the guidance they have received with their own dedication and hard work, earning themselves coveted acceptance offers to top-tier colleges and universities, including Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, Yale University, Princeton University, Columbia University, New York University, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, Oxford University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Pennsylvania, and Dartmouth College, to name but a few. I took the GMAT this past weekend in Manhattan and got a 680. I'm quite happy with the score - a bit frustrated as I wanted a 700, but still pleased. The course was helpful. The best part I feel was the time spent drilling - and answering our questions on specific problems.

Meet a Beijing Tutor: Kayla B.
Kayla B. grew up in the Pacific Northwest and lived in Seattle as a child. Her father was a professor at the University of Washington, and she recalls being fortunate to grow up in a home where learning was not only valued but enjoyed. "Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher, like my dad," she smiles. "I remember going and sitting in the back row of his college classes a few times, and seeing people raise their hands to answer his questions and how excited someone was when they finally mastered a hard concept made me want to have the same kind of impact on people." Kayla worked hard in high school, writing for her school newspaper about current events and competing in varsity swimming, cross-country, and soccer. She chaired numerous committees and even won a state-wide speech and debate award. When it came time to begin thinking about colleges, Kayla participated in group tutoring courses to help her do her very best on the SAT. She also did a few private tutoring sessions with a family friend who was a retired English professor. Kayla scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT and had her pick of colleges and universities to choose from. While her family was sad to see her leave, they also supported her choice to attend Brown University all the way across the country.
Kayla loved her time at Brown, making new friends and strong connections that have continued to play an important role in her professional life. After graduating with an undergraduate degree in education, Kayla was accepted to Columbia University, a U.S. News & World Report Top 10 School for Education. After receiving her master's degree in education, she accepted a position in an underserved school working with at-risk high school children. While the work was challenging, Kayla loved knowing she was making a difference. She was often offered the chance to accept promotions that involved moving into an administrative position, but she preferred to stay where she was, working directly with the students who needed her most.
Shortly after getting married, Kayla's husband was offered a chance to relocate to Beijing. While Kayla was nervous about what the move might mean for her teaching career, she was also excited about moving to a new city in a country she'd never visited before. "Beijing was so alive and dynamic," she says, "and I knew from the moment I arrived this was absolutely going to be my second home." Kayla quickly found a job teaching English and appreciated the dedication her students showed towards their studies. When a position opened at the Beijing office of Manhattan Review, she applied, thinking it would be a good way to learn more about educational opportunities available to teachers such as herself, and we were thrilled to welcome her to our team. Regardless of the test Kayla is helping her students prepare for, her clients appreciate how organized and patient she is. "Everyone can learn," she says with a smile, "even though everyone doesn't learn in the same way." When she isn't helping the next generation of students prepare for their own exciting careers, Kayla can be found eating local street food, visiting Chinese art exhibits with her husband, and sketching the unique architecture of the city.
