Meet a Beijing SAT Tutor: Willa A.
Willa A. describes herself as being "incredibly" familiar with tutoring from an early age. Diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia when she was a child, Willa struggled to focus in class and repeatedly failed tests "even though I was smart and wanted so badly to do well." Willa's school worked closely with her parents to help her find a tutor who could help her master test-taking strategies, as well as learn to study in ways that allowed her to retain the information she would ultimately be tested on. "Just because I started working with a tutor didn't mean school was suddenly easy for me," Willa clarifies, "but for the first time in my life, I realized it was possible to learn, to remember things, and to do well on tests. Not only did that help my grades, it dramatically helped my confidence, too."
A native of Phoenix, Arizona, Willa grew up dreaming of attending Johns Hopkins University but knew there was no way her family could afford such a prestigious school. "If I was going to go there, I'd have to have financial help," she shares, "and the best way I found to ensure I got that help was to ace the SAT." Willa worked with her tutor to prepare for the SAT, focusing on her ability to pace herself over the lengthy test, in addition to mastering the necessary material she would be tested on. "I've never liked tests," she admits, "but by the time the actual test day rolled around, I'd answered so many practice questions and taken so many practice tests, I knew exactly what to expect, and that made it easier to focus instead of freaking out."
Willa's hard work and perseverance were duly rewarded when she received her official acceptance letter to Johns Hopkins University. And not only was she accepted…she also received a generous financial assistance package that made it possible for her to attend, due almost entirely to her SAT score. Willa graduated from Johns Hopkins with a degree in education before obtaining a master's degree from Columbia University, specializing in education policy. Willa relocated to Beijing when she accepted a job with an educational consulting company where she was able to work with local, national, and international schools on better serving the academic needs of students with learning differences.
Passionate about ensuring equal access to education for everyone, Willa began offering weekend seminars for neurodiverse high school students on how to prepare for the SAT, using the skills she'd developed from her own tutoring experiences, as well as her years spent teaching. Her courses became incredibly popular and when she was invited to join the team at Manhattan Review, it was a win-win situation for all. "I love working with students who think differently, who see the world differently," says Willa. "They give me hope for the future, because doing things the same way we've always done them clearly isn't going to solve anything. We need leaders who aren't afraid to think outside the box." When she isn't making the SAT a little less terrifying, Willa enjoys going to outdoor music events, running marathons, and visiting the 798 Art Zone with colleagues.
