The IELTS, one of the two most widely used English language assessments in the world, is a British examination, and it is therefore preferred at many universities in the United Kingdom. The other is the TOEFL, which is an American test. Although most schools in the United States will accept either assessment, there are a few American institutions that require or strongly prefer the TOEFL. Nikolai N., a first-generation American of Russian descent, is a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota. His academic credentials include a bachelor of arts in English from the University of Minnesota, a master of arts in teaching from Boston University, and a Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) certificate from American University.
