Over the past few decades, Calgary has grown from a sleepy town with origins dating back past the First Nations tribes to an important leader in energy, financial services, film and television, transportation and logistics, technology and manufacturing, and tourism. The area now known as Calgary was inhabited more than 11,000 years ago by predecessors of the Clovis people, prehistoric Paleoamerican peoples named for the distinctive stone and bone tools they used. Calgary has since been inhabited by many members of the First Nations, including the Blackfoot Confederacy, Siksika, Kainai, as well as the Tsuut'ina people and members of the Metis Nation. In 1787, a young cartographer and fur trader named David Thompson became the first recorded European to visit the nearby Bow River as part of an expedition with the Hudson's Bay Company. In 1873, John Glenn became the first European settler in the Calgary area, and shortly after in the spring of 1875, three priests built a small log cabin on the Elbow River. Around this same time, the area that would eventually become present-day Calgary became an important post for the North-West Mounted Police, now known as the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The land located between the Bow and Elbow Rivers became popular for cattle ranching in the 1800s, and in 1883 the Canadian Pacific Railway connected Calgary with other growing or developed cities across Canada.
Calgary functioned as a frontier town for most of the late 1800s, and while much of the community's downtown was destroyed in the Calgary Fire of 1886, the town soon rebuilt, and it wasn't long before real estate began to boom. The early 1900s saw massive growth and expansion, as well as an interest in agriculture and ranching. The year 1912 marked the first Calgary Stampede, which has grown into one of the world's largest and most well-attended rodeos. The mid- to late-1900s saw Calgary benefit from oil and gas discoveries, although this made little difference to most ordinary citizens, as the outbreak of WWI brought a six-year recession to the area. Following WWII, Alberta began to focus on improving access to higher education, expanding in the oil and gas industries, and developing a strong tourism program.
Education is important to those who live in Calgary, and the city is home to the publicly funded University of Calgary, a respected research university and Calgary's largest degree-granting institution. The area is also known for Mount Royal University and SAIT Polytechnic, which provides polytechnic and apprentice education and training, in addition to granting certificates and degrees. Other publicly funded post-secondary institutions nearby include the Alberta University of the Arts, Ambrose University, Bow Valley College, and St. Mary's University. Athabasca University and the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT) maintain campuses in Calgary. Private institutions of higher learning in the Calgary area include Reeves College, MaKami College, Robertson College, Columbia College, CDI College, and Alberta Bible College.
Calgary has experienced notable population growth over the past few decades, and the downtown area consists of five diverse neighborhoods: Eau Clair (which includes the festival district), Downtown West End, Downtown Commercial Core, Chinatown, and Downtown East Village. The city experiences a semi-monsoonal humid continental climate, with warm, comfortable summers and dry, freezing winters with temperatures consistently dropping below zero degrees Celsius. Out of Canada's 100 largest cities, Calgary boasts the honor of having the most sunny days, with an average of 332 days of sunshine each year.
Calgary International Airport, in the northeastern section of the city, makes visiting the city easy, and whether you prefer to schedule a visit during summer or winter, there is always a fun indoor or outdoor activity waiting for you to participate. For those who enjoy outdoor activities, there is cross-country skiing, ice skating, snowboarding, sledding, ice biking, YYC Hot Chocolate Fest, and watching the impressive Northern Lights. During the warmer months, popular outdoor activities include boating, tubing on the Bow River, horseback riding, swimming, and hiking in Bowmont Park.
Calgary features the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium which brings performing arts to the community, including Broadway musicals and both traveling and local stage productions. Theater patrons can enjoy performances from the Alberta Ballet Company and the Calgary Opera, as well as the Arts Commons, a 400,000 square foot complex hosting more than a dozen theaters. Calgary is home to a strong choral music community, as well as numerous marching bands. The Glenbow Museum is the largest museum in western Canada and includes a First Nations gallery.
Popular annual festivals include the Calgary Stampede, the Calgary International Film Festival, the Calgary Folk Music Festival, FunnyFest Calgary Comedy Festival, Wordfest, Calgary Pride, and Sled Island Music Festival to name just a few beloved events in this dynamic and fun-loving city. Nearby resort towns such as Banff, Lake Louise, and Canmore have become increasingly popular tourist destinations. While Calgary is perhaps best known for its beef, the city has slowly begun to emerge as a global food powerhouse with a diverse variety of incredible independent and chef-owned restaurants certain to tempt every palate. Known for offering the finest dining options in Alberta, Calgary offers something for every foodie, including Korean, Indian, and Chinese dishes, as well as sushi, pizza, and mouth-watering steaks. Whatever you might be craving, chances are you'll find it in Calgary.

I am happy to report I took the GMAT on the 18th of December and received a score of 750.

Meet a Calgary Tutor: Candice L.
Candice L. grew up in Denver and loved living in the Mile High City. Her father was a professor at a respected local university, and she recalls being fortunate to grow up in a home where education was viewed as privilege rather than a chore. "I always knew I wanted to be a teacher," shares Candice, "just like my dad. I'd sit in the back of his lectures and to see students so excited when they learned something new and useful…I knew I wanted to make the same kind of difference in people's lives." Candice worked exceptionally hard in high school, writing for her school's online newspaper, hosting student and faculty discussion groups and roundtables on a bi-weekly podcast she co-hosted with her best friend, and competing in varsity cross country as well as competing in a variety of horse shows and equestrian events. Candice's high school offered an intensive group prep course for students taking the SAT, and in addition to participating in this, Candice also completed a few private tutoring sessions with a retired teacher, "just to make sure I wasn't leaving anything out." Candice's hard work and dedication paid off when she obtained an SAT score in the 99th percentile and received numerous offers of admission to colleges across the United States.
While Candice loved Denver, she was also excited to live some place new, and while her family was sad to see her leave, they fully supported her decision to attend Yale University. Candice loved her time at Yale, making close friendships and developing strong professional relationships that continue to play an important role in her life. After graduating with an undergraduate degree in education, Candice remained at Yale to obtain a master's degree in teaching from the rigorous and highly ranked graduate program. She then accepted a consulting position with an organization focused on providing high-quality education to students with varied academic needs and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds, which allowed her to relocate to Calgary.
As she accepted well-deserved promotions within her organization, Candice found herself missing the direct interaction she'd had with students during her time in the classroom. When an opening for an instructor appeared at the Calgary office of Manhattan Review, Candice applied and was almost immediately welcomed to the team. Students love Candice's uncomplicated method of presenting new information, but they also appreciate her sense of humor and her ability to use real-world examples that make it easy to remember complex concepts. Candice offers group courses and private tutoring, and there is regularly a wait list to work with her. "I love what I do, which makes me incredibly lucky," smiles Candice. "Teaching is an honor, but it's also just so rewarding to see people succeed." When Candice isn't preparing the next generation of college students for their own academic successes, she can be found strolling along Calgary's RiverWalk with friends, enjoying the award-winning coffee at local cafes, and learning to play ice hockey with colleagues.
