The area now known as Cambridge was originally inhabited by the Pawtucket and Massachusett Native American tribes prior to European colonization. Following the arrival of English settlers in 1630, the area was referred to as "The Newe Towne," then renamed "Newtowne" before eventually being rechristened "Cambridge" in 1638 in honor of the University of Cambridge in England. Cambridge played a significant role in the Revolutionary War, and Cambridge Common is where George Washington took command of a force of Patriot soldiers in 1775, establishing Cambridge as the birthplace of the Continental Army. The 19th century saw Cambridge experiencing rapid growth, much of it due to the construction of the West Boston Bridge, connecting Cambridge directly to Boston. The building of new bridges, as well as wider and more dependable roads, led to an explosion in both industrial and residential growth.
Around this same time, Cambridge became the center of a literary revolution due to a group of writers who became known as the Fireside poets. They were given this designation because families would sit around their evening fires and read the writers' poetry out loud for everyone in the family to enjoy. Famous and influential Fireside poets included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, James Russell Lowell, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, to name a few prominent writers of this era.
For much of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the largest employer in Cambridge was the New England Glass Company, and the population of the city grew as the promise of steady employment drew people to the area, which was also home to Kennedy Biscuit Factory, later part of Nabisco brands. With the onset of the Great Depression, industry began to wane, and education featured more prominently in the lives of local citizens, changing the city from an industrial to an intellectual powerhouse.
Harvard University (originally named Newe College) was founded in 1636 and is the nation's first institution of higher learning. Radcliffe College was founded in 1879 and functioned as an elite liberal arts college for women until it became part of Harvard University in 1999. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), founded in 1861, is also located in Cambridge. Education is exceptionally important and highly valued in this New England city, and Cambridge consistently ranks among the most educated US cities among students of all ages, from elementary to high school to college.
While industry, in general, is not as large of an employer as it used to be, the pharmaceutical industry of Cambridge has thrived over the past fifty years. Cambridge is home to the headquarters of many leading biotechnology and pharmaceutical organizations, including Biogen, the Genetic Institute, and Genzyme. Other companies maintain large laboratories in the area, including Novartix, Teva, Editas Medicine, Catabasis, and Moderna Therapeutics, to name but a few. More recently, companies such as AstraZeneca, GlaxoSmithKline, and Pfizer have opened offices in Cambridge.
With its focus on higher education and biotechnology, one might think Cambridge is all work and no play, but locals will tell you otherwise…Cambridge is home to world-class dining and entertainment. The culinary scene, in particular, has enjoyed significant growth in the past few years, featuring new restaurants from highly respects chefs in addition to established neighborhood favorites. Whether you're looking for classic American comfort food, trendy seafood dishes, mouth-watering burgers, or gourmet pizza and pasta, the menu options in Cambridge are sure to make any foodie's mouth water.

I took the GMAT yesterday and got......680 (unofficial score). Needless to say I am delighted, if somewhat stunned. I never thought I'd score 100 points higher than last time around. My maths improved the most (from 32nd percentile to 56th percentile) and I was in the 95th percentile in my verbal. If I'd had a few more weeks I'm sure I could have improved my maths score even more, but I'm happy with 680. Thanks for all your help and the excellent classes. They really were invaluable and worth every minute.

Meet a Cambridge Tutor: Kaden S.
Kaden S. grew up in Southern California before moving to Cambridge when the company his father worked for relocated to the East Coast. "I wasn't sure what to expect," Kaden recalls, "although I remember being really excited about living someplace where it actually snowed." Kaden came to love Cambridge, particularly since he was already an avid cyclist. "There are so many bike trails, it's amazing, and you always see something new or interesting," he shares with a smile. After graduating from high school, Kaden's impressive SAT score earned him numerous offers of admission to various colleges, but he wanted to remain local and chose to study at Boston University, where he obtained his undergraduate degree in biology.
After diligent preparation, Kaden obtained a stellar score on the MCAT and was accepted to Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Eager to help patients with untreatable cancers, he completed a prestigious internship and fellowship, both focused on cellular proliferation and regeneration. After completing his medical training, Kaden was thrilled to accept a research position with a biotech company based in Cambridge. "My grandfather passed away from stage 4 cancer," he explains, "and it's my hope to help create a world where no family loses anyone to cancer ever again."
During his time at Boston University, Kaden supplemented the partial scholarship he received by working as a tutor in the university's learning lab, helping others who didn't find subjects like biology and chemistry quite as easy or interesting as he did. Kaden realized that not only did he enjoy helping others, but he was also good at it. After settling into his new job, he began to look for ways to teach and work with students. "Research is amazing," he says, "but some days it can seem very lonely, and I wanted to find a way to help the next generation of researchers." Kaden became connected to Manhattan Review through a friend and began working as a private tutor, specializing in helping students prepare for standardized college admission tests. Kaden's students love learning from someone with real-world experience and appreciate his insights into mastering even the most intimidating exam. When he isn't helping future scientists prepare to change the world, Kaden can be found biking along the Charles River with his daughter, supporting his wife at a community theater performance, or dining out with food-loving friends.
