Meet a Cambridge SAT Tutor: Winston R.

Winston R. describes himself as being "very" familiar with tutoring from an early age. Diagnosed with ADHD when he was a child, Winston struggled to focus in class and repeatedly failed tests "even though I was smart and wanted to do well." Winston's school worked closely with his parents to help him find a tutor who could help him master test-taking strategies, as well as learn to study in ways that allowed him to retain the information he would ultimately be tested on. "Just because I started working with a tutor didn't mean school was suddenly easy for me," he clarifies, "but for the first time in my life, I realized it was possible to learn, to remember things, and to do well on tests. Not only did that help my grades, but it also dramatically helped my confidence, too."

A native of Houston, Winston grew up dreaming of attending Rice University but knew there was no way his family could afford such a prestigious school. "If I was going to go there, I'd have to have financial help," he shares, "and the best way I found to ensure I got that help was to ace the SAT." Winston worked with his tutor to prepare for the SAT, focusing on his ability to pace himself over the lengthy test, in addition to mastering the necessary material he would be tested on. "I've never liked tests," he admits, "but by the time the actual test day rolled around, I'd answered so many practice questions and taken so many practice tests, I knew exactly what to expect, and that made it easier to focus instead of freaking out."

Winston's hard work and perseverance were duly rewarded when he received his official acceptance letter to Rice University. And not only was he accepted…he also received a generous financial assistance package that made it possible for him to attend, due almost entirely to his SAT score. Winston graduated from Rice with a degree in education before obtaining a master's degree from Columbia University, specializing in education policy. Winston relocated to Cambridge when he accepted a job with an educational consulting company where he was able to work with local, national, and international schools on better serving the academic needs of students with learning differences.

Passionate about ensuring equal access to education for everyone, Winston began offering weekend seminars for neurodiverse high school students on how to prepare for the SAT, using the skills he'd developed from his own tutoring experiences. His courses became incredibly popular and when he was invited to join the team at Manhattan Review, it was a win-win situation for all. "I love working with students who think differently, who see the world differently," says Winston. "They give me hope for the future, because doing things the same way we've always done them clearly isn't going to solve anything. We need leaders who aren't afraid to think outside the box." When he isn't making the SAT a little less terrifying, Winston enjoys building furniture, cheering on the Patriots with friends, and going to outdoor music festivals.
