Over the past few decades, Chapel Hill has grown from a sleepy town with origins dating back to the 1700s to an important leader in education and cutting-edge technology. Together with nearby cities Raleigh and Durham, Chapel Hill forms part of the "Research Triangle" in North Carolina, a nicknamed earned from its proximity to three major and world-respected research universities: Duke University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was founded in 1789 and serves as the flagship of the University of North Carolina system. This award-winning public research university is consistently featured on "Best Of" and "Top 10" lists world-wide and is considered one of the rare "Public Ivies" in the United States, public universities that offer significantly reduced tuition compared to private universities without sacrificing the quality of the education. One of the oldest universities in the United States, UNC Chapel Hill offers degrees in more than 70 courses of study, but is perhaps best known for programs in psychology, biology, business administration, and political science. The university's faculty and alumni include nine Nobel Prize laureates, 23 Pulitzer Prize winners, and 51 Rhodes Scholars.

Duke University is a private research university founded in 1838 and with an annual research budget of more than $1 billion dollars, it is consistently ranked among the top 10 largest research universities in the United States. With more than a dozen faculty members regularly appearing on annual lists of the world's most cited researchers, Duke University scientists are committed to guiding and supporting the next generation of academic leaders. Duke University falls in the "most selective" admission category as reported by U.S. News & World Report, with an undergraduate acceptance rate around six percent. The most common majors are in the fields of engineering and behavioral science, with the most popular graduate programs being in the areas of divinity, engineering, business, and environmental and earth sciences.

Rounding out the major universities in the Research Triangle area is North Carolina State University, a public research university founded in 1887 and the largest university in both North and South Carolina. Known as "NC State" by locals, this large university boasts strong programs in engineering, statistics, agriculture, and life sciences, in addition to a world-class veterinary program. North Carolina State University libraries are some of the most impressive research libraries in the United States and hold extensive collections across multiple campus while featuring a beloved interloan library system with Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill.

Quality education in North Carolina is not only available at the collegiate level, however, as quite a few high schools in the Chapel Hill area have achieved national recognition and distinction for excellence, including East Chapel Hill High School, Carrboro High School, and Chapel Hill High School. While some students attend private schools, most attend the award-winning public schools, which are consistently ranked as some of the best in the state and the nation. Although serving as the principal city of a larger metropolitan area, most residents agree Chapel Hill manages to retain a small-town feel. Universities serve as a major source of employment for residents, but in addition to being a hub for higher education, Chapel Hill is also a sought-after location for technology, research, and biotech companies.

For those who love sports, there is always something to enjoy in the Chapel Hill area, and a passion for basketball and soccer is an important and notable feature of the town's culture. Competition between North Carolina's four Atlantic Coast Conference teams is often referred to as the "Tobacco Road rivalry," and features intense competition between the North Carolina Tar Heels, the Duke Blue Devils, the NC State Wolfpack, and the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. For those who enjoy other recreational pastimes, Chapel Hill is home to numerous bike paths and walking trails, including Battle Branch Trail, Morgan Creek Trail, and Bolin Creek Trail, the city's oldest and most popular greenway. Chapel Hill has been hailed as one of the "foodiest" small towns in American by Bon Appetit, and local restaurants have been featured on the Food Network, as well as in publications such as Food & Wine and Southern Living. Murals decorate many of the buildings located downtown, and Festifall, an annual street fair that has taken place for more than 30 years, occurs each October and features artists, crafts makers, food vendors, and musical performers.

Manhattan Review has helped a wide variety of Chapel Hill students pursue their individual academic goals: attending graduate school via the GMAT and GRE, college via the SAT and ACT, law school via the LSAT, and learning the English language via the TOEFL and IELTS. Students have paired the guidance they have received with their own dedication and hard work, earning themselves coveted acceptance offers to top-tier colleges and universities, including Harvard University, Stanford University, Duke University, MIT, Yale University, Princeton University, Columbia University, New York University, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, Oxford University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Dartmouth College, to name but a few. Former Manhattan Review clients have used their stellar educations to establish meaningful and successful careers around the globe, counting their work with us as a significant contributor to their well-deserved success. If you, too, seek collegiate and professional success, we encourage you to contact us today to find out how we can partner with you to assist you in achieving your goals and making your dreams come true.

At the end of March I took one of your weekend GMAT courses in Frankfurt. I just wanted to let you know that this investment has paid off!!! I took the test two days ago - and my total score is 730! I’m so relieved... Thanks a lot to all of you.

Meet a Chapel Hill Tutor: Jason R.

Jason R. grew up in San Francisco and lived on the West Coast as a child. His mother was a professor at a respected university, and he recalls being fortunate to grow up in a home where learning was encouraged and education was viewed as something to be enjoyed rather than endured. "I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, like my mom," Jason recalls. "Sometimes I'd sit in the back of whatever hall she was lecturing in, and watching students get so excited when they learned something or knew the answer to a question made me want to be part of the educational system. I wanted to make a real difference in people's lives." Jason worked exceptionally hard in high school, writing for his school's newspaper, hosting student and faculty roundtables on his bi-weekly podcast, and competing in varsity soccer, water polo, track, and tennis. He chaired a variety of committees dedicated to social justice and improving literacy and even won a state-wide speech and debate competition. Jason's high school offered an intensive group prep course for students preparing for the SAT or ACT and in addition to taking advantage of this, Jason worked with his aunt, a former high school teacher, for a few private tutoring sessions to focus on specific issues he wanted to master before taking the SAT. Jason's hard work and dedication were rewarded when he scored in the 99th percentile on the SAT and received offers of admission to numerous prestigious colleges and universities across the United States.

While he loved San Francisco, Jason was also excited at the chance to see and experience more of the country, and while his family was sad to see him move, they fully supported his decision to attend Duke University. Jason loved his time at Duke, making close friends and developing strong professional connections that still play an important role in his life. After graduating with a degree in education, Jason attended nearby UNC Chapel Hill, where he obtained a master's degree in teaching from the rigorous and respected graduate program. He then accepted a consulting position with an organization focused on providing high-quality education to students with varied academic needs and diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. As he climbed the corporate ladder and accepted well-deserved promotions, Jason found himself missing the direct interaction he'd had with students during his time in the classroom. When an opening for an instructor appeared at the Chapel Hill office of Manhattan Review, Jason applied and was almost immediately welcomed to the instructional team.

Students love Jason's straightforward, uncomplicated method of teaching, but also appreciate his sense of humor and his ability to use real-world examples that stick in their minds and make concepts easier to understand. He offers group courses, as well as private tutoring, and there is regularly a wait list to work with him. "I love what I do, and that makes me super lucky," smiles Jason. "Teaching is an honor and a great responsibility, and nothing makes me happier than seeing students I've worked with enjoy their own successes." When Jason isn't preparing the next generation of college students for their own academic success, he can be found cheering on his beloved Blue Devils, biking with his wife along their favorite greenways, and taking his son and daughter to the Morehead Planetarium.
