Meet a Chapel Hill SAT Tutor: Portia M.
Portia M. knows a thing or two about standardized tests, having spent most of her life working with experienced instructors and tutors after she was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age. Portia struggled to pay attention in class and even though she studied hard for tests, her performance never reflected her hours of preparation, leading her to feel "incredibly frustrated, because I really wanted to do well in school. Education is big in my family, and even though my parents constantly assured me I wasn't dumb, I couldn't help feeling that way…until we figured out how I learned best." Portia's parents worked closely with her school, and after multiple rounds of cognitive and neuropsychological testing with a variety of doctors, Portia was determined to have ADHD, which allowed her academic struggles to be understood in a completely different light. Portia's guidance counselor helped her parents find a tutor to work with her, teaching her effective test-taking strategies and guiding her to study in ways that allowed her to retain important information. "I don't want anyone to think working with a tutor magically made everything about school easy for me," cautions Portia. "Learning was still hard, but I'd finally seen that I could do it, and that was like being given a key to a treasure chest. For the first time in my life, I realized it was possible to do well on tests."
A native of Rhode Island, Portia grew up dreaming of attending Brown University but knew there was no way her family could afford such a prestigious school even if she managed to be accepted. "If I truly wanted to go there, I would have to receive financial assistance, and after doing a ton of research, it seemed that a high SAT score was one realistic way of getting scholarships. So, I decided I would work however hard I needed to in order to ace the SAT," Portia says with a laugh. Portia worked with her long-time tutor to prepare for the SAT, in addition to participating in an online prep course that offered her flexibility around her ongoing commitments and extracurricular activities. "By the time the real SAT came around, I'd taken so many practice exams and studied so many questions, nothing was a surprise, and I was able to relax enough to work to my full potential."
Portia's persistence and dedication were rewarded when she not only received her official acceptance letter to Brown University, but also received generous offers of financial aid, ensuring she could afford to attend the school of her dreams due almost entirely to her outstanding SAT score. Portia graduated from Brown with a degree in education before obtaining her master's degree with a specialization in education policy from Columbia University. Portia ultimately accepted a position with a well-known educational consulting company in the Research Triangle area where she was able to work with schools on identifying better ways to serve the needs of students with learning differences, ensuring other children would receive the support that had been so beneficial to her as a child.
Passionate about ensuring equal access to education for everyone, Portia began offering weekend seminars for neurodiverse high school students on how to prepare for the SAT, using the skills she'd developed from her own education and tutoring experiences. Her workshops became so popular that waitlists began to develop, and when she was invited to join the team at the Chapel Hill office of Manhattan Review, she couldn't have been happier. "It's a true privilege to support my neurodiverse students," she says. "They give me the most hope for the future because they're not afraid of taking risks and doing things differently, and that's the best way to bring about much-needed change." When Portia isn't making the SAT less terrifying to her students, she enjoys working with silver and creating her own jewelry, attending live bluegrass concerts, and going horseback riding with her husband.
