The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. Meet a Chapel Hill TOEFL Tutor: Hazel C.

Hazel C. was born in a small town in Kentucky and grew up with a dream of traveling the world. "Where I was born, no one ever really leaves," she explains. "People talk about it, but when it comes down to it, they ultimately stay where things are familiar. I was determined to be different." As a child, Hazel loved to pretend she was a teacher and would arrange her dolls and stuffed animals to be her students, teaching them whatever she happened to be learning in school, alongside the finer points of English, math, and history. While Hazel wasn't exactly certain how she would combine her love of teaching with her dream of travel, she knew the first step towards taking control of her own life was obtaining the best education possible. "My parents always stressed the importance of a college education," shares Hazel, "so I knew my professional life would start by attending college." Hazel was involved in a variety of extracurricular activities during high school, including basketball, cheerleading, speech and debate, and drama. When combined with her high grades, her hard work was rewarded when she received numerous offers of admission to colleges across the United States. While her family was disappointed to see her leave, they fully supported her decision to attend New York University, "because when else was I going to have the chance to live in New York?" laughs Hazel. 

During her undergraduate study, Hazel began to work part-time as a tutor in the university's learning center, and what initially began as a way to help manage expenses allowed Hazel the opportunity to fully explore her passion for teaching and helping others. Hazel graduated with a degree in history before pursuing a master's in teaching and a TESOL certificate from Columbia University. After working in public schools for a few years, Hazel was offered a position with an international company focused on helping children and young adults around the world learn the English language. Hazel packed her suitcase and for the next ten years, she traveled the world, living and teaching in countries such as Bali, South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. 

After a while, Hazel decided it was time to put down roots and remain in one place for more than a year or two. She accepted a position with a private school in the Durham area and immediately felt at home in North Carolina. When a colleague told her about an opening with Manhattan Review's Chapel Hill office, Hazel applied and, given her impressive teaching background, she was welcomed to the team with open arms. Hazel is a naturally gifted instructor, but she works hard to stay on top of cutting-edge trends in learning, as well as the latest research on the most effective teaching strategies and methodologies.
