When it comes to learning complex information, many students enjoy studying in classroom-style group courses, finding others' questions and comments insightful and inspiring. Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their full capabilities when attempting to learn in the company of others. These students may worry about holding the group back or slowing them down; alternatively, they may experience frustration or boredom when they have mastered a particular concept but are unable to move on to a new topic until everyone in the group has demonstrated similar mastery. If you know you learn best through a customized learning plan delivered through one-on-one instruction, we invite you to consider working with one of Manhattan Review's world-class private tutors.

Now, more than ever, a high GMAT score is incredibly important, and the highest scores unquestionably open doors for students and professionals looking to take their success to the next level. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the organization responsible for the administration of the GMAT, tracks and reports statistical information about test-takers, studying them as a whole while also dividing them into subgroups. Total GMAT scores range from 200 to 800, and roughly two-thirds of test-takers will score between 400 and 600. According to the available statistics, the mean GMAT total score for all test-takers is 574. Top business programs around the world require very high GMAT scores. For example, the University of Texas at Austin, repeatedly ranked as one of the best business schools in the world, regularly has an incoming first-year class with average GMAT scores falling in the range of 650-740. When preparing your application to the business program of your dreams, make sure you stand out from the competition with application materials that shine.

Meet a Durban GMAT Tutor: Jackson R.

Jackson R. grew up in Washington, DC, and couldn't wait to attend college so he could move to the West Coast. "Don't get me wrong," he quickly clarifies. "There were a lot of things I liked about DC, but I've always been a big water person, and I wanted to live near the ocean where I could snorkel and surf." Jackson's parents supported his dream, as long as he obtained a quality college education, and Jackson worked incredibly hard during high school. He took honors and advanced placement courses, participated in student government and model United Nations, completed extra-credit projects whenever possible, and played the trombone in the marching band. Jackson obtained an impressive SAT score and combined with his extracurricular activities and a strong essay, he received numerous offers of admission to colleges across the United States. It was no surprise to anyone when he chose to attend the University of California at San Diego, where he obtained an undergraduate degree in business administration while making his childhood dream of living near the ocean come true.

Jackson knew he wanted to obtain an MBA, and he also knew he would benefit from as much help as he could get. Jackson worked with a private tutor through Manhattan Review, meeting remotely and completing assigned homework and readings on his own time. He credits his tutor with helping him not only master the test content, but also overcome his significant test-related anxiety. "I've always hated tests," shares Jackson, "but once my tutor showed me the GMAT could be mastered, it almost became like a game, applying the right strategy to arrive at the correct answer." Jackson's hard work paid off when he scored in the 98th percentile on the GMAT, earning himself offers of admission to competitive business programs across the United States. Jackson ultimately chose to obtain his MBA at Stanford University. After graduating, Jackson worked in the Bay Area for a few years, until his company offered him the chance to relocate to Durban. "I'd heard of the Golden Mile," he says with a smile, "and any place with good surfing, diving, and snorkeling was alright by me."

Jackson easily settled into his new home, and in his new position he was able to take on mentorship opportunities, connecting with new hires and guiding them to corporate success. He was surprised to discover how much he enjoyed working with others and helping them achieve their own successes, which led him to obtain a master's degree in teaching through an online program offered by North Carolina State University. Jackson wanted to find a way to support emerging MBAs earlier in their careers, and when an opening for a GMAT tutor appeared at the Durban office of Manhattan Review, he quickly applied and was enthusiastically welcomed to the team. Jackson's students love learning from him, appreciating his patience as much as his real-world experiences, in addition to his ability to translate his experiences into valuable educational lessons. "You absolutely don't need to be brilliant to do well on the GMAT," assures Jackson with a laugh. "You have to be willing to study and work hard, but you don't need to be a natural test taker. I love teaching students how to succeed so they can achieve their own dreams." When he isn't helping future business leaders excel on the GMAT, Jackson can be found surfing with his girlfriend, learning to catch and prepare his own fresh fish, and spending time learning about the history of his new city along the Inanada Heritage Route.
