When it comes to studying, many students enjoy learning in classroom-style group courses, finding others' questions and comments insightful and inspiring. Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their full capabilities when attempting to learn in the company of others. These students may worry about holding the group back or slowing them down; alternatively, they may experience frustration or boredom when they have mastered a particular concept but are unable to move on to a new topic until everyone in the group has demonstrated similar mastery. If you know you learn best through a personalized learning plan and one-on-one instruction, we invite you to consider working with one of our esteemed private tutors.

Now, more than ever, a high GMAT score is incredibly important, and the highest scores unquestionably open doors for students and professionals looking to take their success to the next level. The Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), the organization responsible for the administration of the GMAT, tracks and reports statistical information about test-takers, studying them as a whole while also dividing them into subgroups. Total GMAT scores range from 200 to 800, and roughly two-thirds of test-takers will score between 400 and 600. According to the available statistics, the mean GMAT total score for all test-takers is 574. Top business programs around the world require very high GMAT scores. For example, the University of Texas at Austin, repeatedly ranked as one of the best business schools in the world, regularly has an incoming first-year class with average GMAT scores falling in the range of 650-740. When preparing your application to the business program of your dreams, make sure you stand out from the competition with application materials that shine.

I was able to raise my maths score significantly from 28 (25%) to 43(71%)... So in total I raised my GMAT score from 490 (36%) to 580 (64%). The AWA score was 5.5 in both tests… I got into one of my two first choice programs. Thanks again and looking forward to hearing from you again!

Meet a Honolulu GMAT Tutor: Nancy W.

Nancy W. grew up in Chicago and while she loved living in the Windy City, she also looked forward to moving away for college. "There were tons of things I loved about Chicago," she explains, "but I was also really excited to go someplace where I didn't know anyone, to have new experiences on my own. I've always been like that…up for the next big adventure, which definitely isn't the norm in my family." Nancy's parents supported her big dreams of moving far away as long as she obtained a college education, and Nancy set her sights on doing the best she could during high school. She worked incredibly hard, taking honors and advanced placement courses, participating in speech and debate and math club, competing in varsity soccer, and volunteering as a peer tutor in her school's learning lab. Nancy participated in the weekend and after school SAT prep courses offered by her school, and her dedication was rewarded with an impressive score that earned her offers of admission to a variety of colleges and universities across the United States. Nancy ultimately chose to attend the University of California at Berkeley, obtaining an undergraduate degree in business administration.

Nancy knew she wanted to obtain an MBA to pursue a career in international business and finance, and she also knew "I would need all the help I could get to be accepted into the most competitive programs." Nancy worked with a private tutor at the Berkeley office of Manhattan Review, meeting both in-person and virtually to focus on the most troublesome areas of the GMAT and to ensure she was as prepared as possible. "I took so many practice tests!" she laughs. "But being prepared isn't just about being familiar with the test. It's about understanding how to break down questions and being able to do so within a very limited amount of time." Nancy credits her tutor with helping her master effective test-taking strategies, and on the day of her exam, she was confident and prepared, "which was definitely reflected in my score." Nancy's diligence in following her tutor's customized study plan was more than rewarded when she scored in the 98th percentile, receiving offers of admission from her top business program choices. To everyone' surprise, Nancy chose to obtain her MBA back in her hometown of Chicago, attending the prestigious and highly selective Booth School of Business at the University of Chicago.

After graduating, Nancy accepted a position at a global company with an office in Honolulu that allowed her to regularly travel all around the world, and while she initially enjoyed the lifestyle she'd dreamed of as a teen, after a few years she switched to a job that allowed her to be home more, mentoring new hires in the company and offering continuing education seminars on trends in global finance. Remembering how much she had enjoyed being a peer tutor, Nancy sough other ways to connect with professionals earlier in their careers, and when a tutoring position opened at the Honolulu office of Manhattan Review, she applied and was quickly welcomed to the team. "You really don't have to be brilliant to do well on the GMAT," she shares. "You have to be willing to study and work hard, but you don't need to be a natural test-taker. I love teaching students how to succeed on a test, and there's nothing better than watching them achieve their own success." When she isn't helping future business leaders obtain impressive GMAT scores, Nancy can be found practicing yoga on the beach, learning to paint the beautiful Hawaiian scenery, and going dancing with her husband.
