Manhattan Review has been the leading resource for standardized test preparation since 1999, and when it comes to the GRE, we offer a variety of courses to suit every learning need and every busy schedule. Many students enjoy learning in the company of their peers and find their comprehension and retention bolstered by interacting with others preparing for the GRE. Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their best of their abilities when attempting to learn in the company of others, finding their questions distracting, worrying they are not comprehending information fast enough and holding the group back, or experiencing frustration when they have mastered a specific topic but cannot advance to something else until the rest of the group has similarly mastered the information. If you know you learn and remember information best when it is presented in a customized format that takes your specific test-related needs into account, we encourage you to contact us today to learn more about the private tutoring options available at Manhattan Review. Working one-on-one with a private tutor has been shown to accelerate learning, and when you are free to work at your own pace within a tried-and-true system of coursework, you will be amazed at how fast both your knowledge of the GRE and your own self-confidence will improve.

The GRE General Test is designed to closely reflect the sort of thinking employees and executives are required to perform in today's fast-paced business environments. The exam assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing abilities, intentionally focusing on skills that have been developed and strengthened over a long period of time and can be applied to vastly different jobs and positions. GRE scores range between 130 to 170 in the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam, and the writing portion is scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 6 using half-point increments. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking graduate programs, it is imperative to do well on the GRE. An average total GRE score is around 300, but for those seeking admission to the world's best graduate, business, or law programs, scores will need to be far above average. A score of 318 at the 75th percentile is considered "good," whereas a score of 329 at the 90th percentile is considered "excellent." At Manhattan Review, we can help you obtain those excellent scores and take the next step in your academic and/or professional life.

GRE Prep Course Berkeley - Photo of Student Tamara

I would like to let you know that I took the GRE on Monday, December 6th and earned a score of 1200 (600 verbal, 600 quantitative). I think that I did very well on the essay portion of the test as well but won't receive those scores in the mail for a couple weeks or so. I would like to thank my instructor (George S.) and Manhattan Review for helping me to increase my score so much (I got a 1050 the first time I took the GRE in 2002) Thank you very much.

Meet a Berkeley GRE Tutor: Laura R.

Laura grew up in New Hampshire and spent her childhood with passionate love of science. "I read every book the library had that featured any sort of experiment, and I did my best to reproduce them, much to my family's chagrin," she laughs. "Part of our kitchen ceiling is probably still stained orange from the erupting volcano I made one year." While Laura's family supported her love of the scientific method and creating her own experiments, they were pleased to see her shift her learning to school, as opposed to the kitchen table. Laura participated in her school's Science Fair every year as soon as she was old enough and was proud to take home first prize two years in a row. Once she reached high school, Laura joined various science-focused clubs and ultimately became an officer in the Physical Sciences Society before working her way up to president. "I was especially drawn to chemistry," recall Laura, "probably because I was so interested in reactions and explosions and creating new compounds." Laura wrote a column for her school newspaper entitled, "Chemistry for Everybody," sharing scientific developments and insights using everyday language, and she also frequently volunteered as a peer tutor in an after-school instructional program. Laura performed very well on the SAT and her score, combined with her impressive high school accomplishments, earned her numerous offers of admission to colleges across the United States. Laura ultimately chose to attend Princeton University, where she pursued an undergraduate degree in chemistry.

During her time at Princeton, Laura made the most of her educational opportunity, participating in extracurricular organizations and taking on paid and unpaid internships and volunteer opportunities with nearby biotech companies to broader her industry-specific knowledge. She also worked each semester as a tutor in the university's Learning Center. "It was a great way to help others learn things that came easy to me—like algebra and calculus and chemistry—while giving me the chance to connect with students seeking to do their best," she says. After graduating from Princeton University, Laura knew she wanted to continue her education by obtaining a graduate degree, and in order to be competitive among the top doctorate programs, she needed an impressively high GRE score. Laura worked with a private tutor to prepare for the GRE, treating it with the same preparation and dedication she'd directed towards the rest of her academic accomplishments, and her hard work was rewarded when she earned a top percentile score on the exam. While it meant moving across the country, Laura was thrilled when she was accepted into the chemical engineering program at CalTech. She continued working as a tutor during her doctorate program until she graduated, at which point she accepted a position with a biotech start-up company located in Berkeley.

After establishing herself for a few years at her new company, Laura began to miss working with students preparing for their own academic successes, and when a rare position opened up at the Berkeley office of Manhattan Review, she submitted an application, seeking a way to connect with students once again and impart what she had learned from her own experiences. Laura was quickly welcomed to the team, and while she continued working as a chemical consultant to various local companies, she was thrilled to throw herself into helping future graduate students prepare for the GRE. "Not everyone enjoys math and science like I do," laughs Laura, "and that's perfectly fine. There's a method to mastering the GRE, and I can show you how. It's not about you're naturally good at…it's about a specific approach to specific questions and feeling confident in your test-taking abilities." When Laura isn't helping students prepare for the GRE, she can be found hiking Bay Area nature trails, spending the weekends trying out different wineries in nearby Napa, and visiting friends in nearby Monterey to go whale watching.
