The GRE General Test is designed to closely reflect the sort of thinking employees and executives are required to perform in today's fast-paced business environments. The exam assesses verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and analytical writing abilities, intentionally focusing on skills that have been developed and strengthened over a long period of time and can be applied to vastly different jobs and positions. GRE scores range between 130 to 170 in the verbal and quantitative sections of the exam, and the writing portion is scored on a scale ranging from 0 to 6 using half-point increments. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking graduate programs, it is imperative to do well on the GRE. An average total GRE score is around 300, but for those seeking admission to the world's best graduate, business, or law programs, scores will need to be far above average. A score of 318 at the 75th percentile is considered "good," whereas a score of 329 at the 90th percentile is considered "excellent." At Manhattan Review, we can help you obtain those excellent scores and take the next step in your academic and/or professional life.

Meet a Durban GRE Tutor: Brenda S.

Brenda S. grew up in Austin, Texas, and developed a passion for science at an early age. "I was constantly printing out experiments I found online," she laughs, "and thank goodness my mother was so patient, because I was always making a mess in the kitchen pretending I was some famous scientist." Brenda loved conducting experiments and credits them for helping her overcome a childhood fear of failure. "I've always been a little on the perfectionist side," she admits, "and I hated making mistakes, but science taught me mistakes can be valuable…they tell you what doesn't work so you can keep searching for what does work." Brenda's mother was likely thrilled when her daughter shifted her experiments to the science lab at her school, and Brenda spent her time involved in numerous science-related clubs and extracurricular organizations. She won the science fair two years in a row and served as a mentor to middle school children completing their own science projects. She also hosted a podcast examining popular science fiction books and movies and exploring the plausibility of the included science. Brenda additionally volunteered as a peer tutor in her high school's learning center to help classmates "who didn't find chemistry and physics quite as much fun as I did," she smiles.

Brenda performed exceptionally well on the ACT and, combined with her high school accomplishments, she was accepted to numerous colleges and chose to attend Dartmouth University, where she majored in chemistry. She also continued to work as a tutor while completing her undergraduate degree. After graduating, she knew she wanted to obtain an advanced degree, so she worked with a private tutor through Manhattan Review to prepare for the GRE. "Being able to meet virtually was so nice," shares Brenda. "We could schedule sessions when it was most convenient for my schedule and that really helped me focus and make the most of my time." Brenda's hard work and dedication were rewarded when she was accepted into her top two graduate programs, and she happily chose to attend CalTech, consistently ranked among the best chemistry graduate programs in the world.

After graduating from CalTech, Brenda accepted a position with a large biotech company in Southern California. While she enjoyed her position, she was also excited when an opportunity to work with the KZN Science Centre in Durban arose, giving her the chance to move to South Africa. Brenda loved the science education work she did through the Centre, but she also missed working directly with students as she had done for so much of her academic career. When a rare position for a tutor opened up at the local Durban office of Manhattan Review, Brenda eagerly applied, and we quickly welcomed her to the team. Brenda is a natural teacher and a gifted educator who works hard to stay on top of the latest advances in teaching. Her students appreciate her dedication and her patience, as well as her ability to make learning fun. When she isn't helping future graduate students prepare for the GRE, Brenda can be found teaching free science classes to local children, spending time in the Burman Bush nature preserve, and going to the movies with friends.
