A good score on the GRE, according to the Educational Testing Service (ETS) is 150-151 on the Verbal Reasoning section, 152-153 on the Quantitative, and 3.5-4.0 on the writing section, while an average GRE total score is considered around 152. Many of the elite schools require higher scores and some even have strict section score requirements. In University of Pennsylvania, for instance, students need to score 155 on the Verbal section, 156 on the Quantitative and 4.1 on the Analytical Writing one. Often students' programs in one university meet different score requirements, like in Berkeley, where the engineering applicants need a score of 150 verbal, 160 quant and 4 writing for acceptance, while the psychology program requires a minimum score of 160 Verbal, 158 Quantitative and 4.96 in writing. Given these different numbers in score requirements, we advise all our students to research on school's expected scores, so you know what is their exact target score, and based on that can create an individualized study plan for them to achieve it.
