Educational Testing Service (ETS), the organization that administers the GRE, publishes useful data on GRE test-takers that help graduate school applicants understand their potential GRE strengths and weaknesses by undergraduate major. As a group, arts and humanities graduates produce a mean GRE verbal score of 157, which is the highest of any category of subjects. Philosophy majors lead all arts and humanities students with an average GRE verbal score of 160. The strongest quantitative scores of any subject are received by engineering students (average of 159), but engineers are also among the weakest at verbal skills (mean GRE verbal of 149). Among the social scientists, economics majors stand out at 154 verbal and 160 quantitative. Obviously, an individual student might begin their GRE prep above or below these averages, but the typical GRE scores of a test-taker from a given major can be a helpful starting point for the learning process. Manhattan Review uses both general and specific data to help with our assessment of students and suggest appropriate directions for GRE study.

I would like to let you know that I took the GRE on Monday, December 6th and earned a score of 1200 (600 verbal, 600 quantitative). I think that I did very well on the essay portion of the test as well but won't receive those scores in the mail for a couple weeks or so. I would like to thank my instructor (George S.) and Manhattan Review for helping me to increase my score so much (I got a 1050 the first time I took the GRE in 2002) Thank you very much.
