Statistics published by Educational Testing Service (ETS), the administrator of the GRE, show that median GRE section scores are about 150-151 verbal, 152-153 quantitative, and 3.5-4.0 writing. High GRE quantitative scores are more common than high GRE verbal scores. A verbal score of 160, for example, is in the 86th percentile, but a quantitative score of 160 is in the 76th percentile. Approximately 2% of all test-takers score 167 or higher on the verbal section, while 8% score at this same level on the quantitative section. GRE score standards for graduate programs often depend on the academic subject to be studied. At the University of Virginia, for instance, successful applicants to the PhD program in the Department of Statistics typically score "at least 166" on the quantitative section, but this department only expects verbal scores of 153 or higher (this is obviously because statistics is largely a quantitative discipline). At Manhattan Review, we encourage all of our students to become familiar with GRE score requirements or expectations of their chosen universities, schools, and departments, which produce a clear goal for GRE instruction.

GRE Prep Course Warsaw - Photo of Student Tamara

I would like to let you know that I took the GRE on Monday, December 6th and earned a score of 1200 (600 verbal, 600 quantitative). I think that I did very well on the essay portion of the test as well but won't receive those scores in the mail for a couple weeks or so. I would like to thank my instructor (George S.) and Manhattan Review for helping me to increase my score so much (I got a 1050 the first time I took the GRE in 2002) Thank you very much.
