IELTS Private Tutoring in Beijing (China)

The IELTS is one of two major exams used by universities in the English-speaking world to assess English language competency (the other exam is the Test of English as a Foreign Language, or TOEFL). The IELTS is a British examination, and it is therefore favored by many universities in the United Kingdom. The TOEFL is an American test, and many U.S. colleges favor it over the IELTS. A number of postsecondary institutions in both the United States and the United Kingdom, however, will accept either the IELTS or the TOEFL, and we advise all of our test prep clients to verify the English requirements of their preferred undergraduate or graduate program. If you have a choice between the IELTS and the TOEFL, the best solution is to try practice versions of both tests, ultimately favoring whichever one is easier for you. It is important to note that there are some clear differences between the two tests…speaking skills, for example, are evaluated by audio recordings on the TOEFL and by in-person interviews on the IELTS.
The IELTS is graded on a scale of 1 to 9, with higher scores reflecting a better understanding of the English language and a stronger ability to communicate effectively in this language. Schools such as Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and Caltech require a minimum IELTS score of 7 in order to obtain admission to undergrade programs, although incoming students routinely have scores higher than this. Most colleges and universities in the United Kingdom and the United States suggest an IELTS score of 6 to 7 in order to be considered competitive for admission.

Meet a Beijing IELTS Tutor: Brandon A.
Brandon A. dreamed of becoming a famous and award-winning actor from a very young age. "I'd make my younger siblings listen to my acceptance speeches for imaginary awards and tell me how believable I sounded," he laughs, "even though I usually had to bribe them with candy or by offering to do their chores." Brandon happily found a home in community theater, where he made strong friendships and worked his way up from stagehand duties and bit parts to starring roles. When his father's company transferred the family to Italy, Brandon was devastated to move away from his beloved theater company. "Now, of course, I'm aware that there's such a thing as Italian cinema, but as a kid, I thought I'd never act again, or that I'd at least have to wait until I came back to the US for college." Brandon and his family moved to Italy when he was in junior high, and he recalls how difficult it was to learn Italian. "I attended an international immersion school, but I was so overwhelmed, nothing made sense, probably because I was too anxious to focus." Brandon's family secured the services of a respected private tutor to help their son learn the new language, and this proved to be an important turning point for him. "Working one-on-one, where I could go at my own pace, learning Italian wasn't quite as daunting and actually became fun," he shares. When his father's company offered to extend his contract, Brandon whole-heartedly endorsed staying in Italy, and he soon came to view Florence as his new home.
When it was time to begin applying to colleges, Brandon knew exactly where he wanted to go. "My parents met at the Boston University, and ever since I knew that I wanted to go there, too…it felt like a family school, somehow." Due to his impressive SAT scores, as well as his strong high school grades and involvement in clubs and other extracurricular activities, Brandon was accepted to Boston University, and he double majored in education and drama. "I loved acting because it allowed me be whoever I wanted, and it also helped me connect with other people like me, so teaching drama seemed like the ideal career for me," says Brandon. After graduating from Boston University, Brandon moved across the country to Los Angeles, known around the world for its films and movie stars. He obtained a master's degree in education from the University of California at Los Angeles. During his time teaching underserved high school students, Brandon realized how many of his students struggled with the English language, particularly when it came to writing. "Having my students write out lines to learn them for a play became a great way of helping them learn more about the English language, especially grammar rules, and also helped them become more comfortable speaking English in public. I thought to myself, this is such an awesome opportunity!" recalls Brandon.
Brandon obtained a TESOL certificate from the University of California at San Diego and after a few more years of teaching drama (and unofficially teaching English), he was recruited by a non-profit organization to teach English and acting overseas. Brandon loved pairing his passion with the chance to travel, and he enjoyed teaching students in South Korea, Japan, Thailand, and Bali. After a few years, however, he decided he liked the idea of putting down roots and staying in one location to start a family. When an opportunity arose to teach English and drama in Beijing, Brandon accepted the position and packed his suitcases. He eventually found a home with Manhattan Review in 2019, and it was a win-win situation for everyone. Brandon loves helping Beijing students master the English language in preparation of exceling on tests like the IELTS and TOEFL, and he continues to teach drama classes, too. His students appreciate his patience, as well as his attention to detail, and there is regularly a waitlist to work with him. When Brandon isn't helping the next generation of English-speakers prepare for their own collegiate success, he can be found attending performances at theaters both large and small, running with his adopted dog, Emmy, and hanging out in his apartment watching his favorite shows with friends.
