IELTS standards at universities typically range from a total score of 5.0 to a total score of 7.5. The University of Toronto, for example, mandates that all of its international students who do not speak English as their native language produce a composite IELTS score of at least 6.5, with no individual section scores below 6.0. The University of Leeds has a minimum IELTS total score standard of 7.0, as does the California Institute of Technology. Some programs at Harvard require IELTS total scores of at least 7.5. Other schools will consider applicants with lower scores, but these institutions tend to be less selective. Examples include the University of Essex (minimum total score of 5.0), the University of Alabama at Birmingham (5.5) and Texas A&M University (6.0). The scores listed above are for general admission, and specific programs may have higher or lower standards. It is important for new IELTS students to have a firm grasp of their particular minimum IELTS scores, which will provide clear goals for IELTS instruction.
