The IELTS exam has a scale from 0 to 9, where 9 is considered as "expert" level of English and 8,7,6 as "very good", "good" and "competent." Each section will receive the same numbers and the total score will be the average number of all the section scores. According to recent data, an average total score on the IELTS is 6, which guarantees an entrance in many US schools. The highly selective educational centers expect scores from 6.5 to 7.5, depending on the program you are applying for. The recent numbers show that most prestigious universities in Canada has score requirements with 0.5 to 1 lower than the ones most wanted in the USA. The McGill, University of Toronto and University of British Columbia, for instance, expect a score of 6.5, while the needed score for admission in MIT is 7 and for Harvard – 7.5. Interesting fact is that university's higher score requirement is 7.5 even though that the maximum score on the test is 9.
