The LSAT is a standardized test that makes a substantial contribution to law school admissions decisions. Data published by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) demonstrate the profound impact of the exam on law school applications. According to LSAC, the Hastings College of the Law at the University of California receives around 3,500 annual applications and accepts approximately 1,600, for an overall acceptance rate of about 46%. LSAC breaks down acceptance rates by GPA and by LSAT scores. The admit rate for Hastings applicants with GPAs between 3.0 and 3.24 was 34%, compared to 75% for students with GPAs of 3.75 and above, showing that law schools value strong undergraduate performance. However, Hastings applicants with LSAT scores of 165 or higher had an acceptance rate of over 88% across all GPA levels, and the rate was only slightly lower for those with GPAs of 3.0-3.24 (86%). At this institution, good grades are helpful, but an LSAT score of 165+ virtually guarantees admission, even if the applicant's GPA is modest.
