The SAT is composed of two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section has a possible range of scores from 200 to 800. Based on accumulated statistics, the average SAT scores for the top twenty universities in the United States are as follows: 711 to 768 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 740 to 797 for Math, and 1450 to 1554 for total SAT score. While these are merely guidelines and every college or university will vary, the importance of exceptionally high SAT scores cannot be underestimated. In order to be competitive for the most respected institutions of higher education, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the SAT.

Meet a Calgary SAT Tutor: Lincoln R.
Lincoln R. grew up in Calgary but moved to Seattle at a young age when his father received a promotion that required the family to relocate. "I was so sad to leave my friends," Lincoln recalls, "and one of the ways I coped with such a big change was through art." Lincoln discovered a love of art as a child, and he spent hours drawing and painting and creating his own comic books, telling stories illustrated with bright colors and featuring a cast of characters each with a unique power or backstory. "I was a pretty shy kid," explains Lincoln, "so my parents signed me up for art classes the week after we moved. It was a great way to make new friends because we could start by talking about our artwork, which eventually led to talking about ourselves and finding shared interests." As he grew older, Lincoln began using various graphic design programs on his computer, although he never outgrew his love of drawing and illustrating by hand. "Using a computer just opened up so many new options," he explains. "It was incredible to see things come to life when before, they'd only existed in my mind."
Lincoln dreamed of becoming a professional artist and set his sights on attending Parsons School of Design in New York, respected around the world for producing leaders in the fields of graphic design, illustration, and other forms of art. "I knew being accepted into such a prestigious program would be like getting into Harvard or Yale," admits Lincoln, "so I wanted to make use of all the available help I could. One of the best ways to make my application stand out was to have a really high SAT score, which would also help me be competitive for scholarships." Lincoln worked with a private tutor, learning how to approach test questions and select the most effective strategy for arriving at the best answer. He took countless practice tests, familiarizing himself with time management and pacing skills, as well as the content he would be expected to know. "After working with my tutor, I was much more prepared than I ever could have been on my own, and on the day of the real test, I didn't panic or feel overwhelmed… I wasn't even surprised by anything." Lincoln's hard work and diligence were rewarded when he obtained a near-perfect SAT score, earning himself a place at the undergraduate program of his dreams, as well as numerous financial aid awards.
After graduating from Parsons School of Design, Lincoln lived in Manhattan for a few years, building a portfolio of freelance clients and teaching art courses at a local community college. He also went on to obtain a master's in teaching from Rutgers University, and when his wife's company offered her the chance to transfer to their Calgary office in exchange for a promotion, Lincoln enthusiastically supported the move. "I was thrilled to have the chance to go home again," he smiles. In Calgary, Lincoln found a position teaching art in an after-school program, and when he learned of an opening for an SAT tutor at the local Manhattan Review office, he quickly applied, wanting to continue helping students achieve their own individual successes. Lincoln was immediately welcomed to the team, and students appreciate his calm demeanor and unhurried approach to mastering test-taking strategies. When Lincoln isn't helping future college students ace the SAT, he can be found skateboarding, biking along Moose Mountain with his wife, and visiting the Royal Tyrrell Museum in Drumheller to view some of the world's most impressive dinosaur fossils.
