The SAT is composed of two sections: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section has a possible range of scores from 200 to 800. Based on accumulated statistics, the average SAT scores for the top twenty universities in the United States are as follows: 711 to 768 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, 740 to 797 for Math, and 1450 to 1554 for total SAT score. While these are merely guidelines and every college or university will vary, the importance of exceptionally high SAT scores cannot be underestimated. In order to be competitive for the most respected institutions of higher education, it is imperative to demonstrate a strong performance on the SAT.

Funny, made things clear and related things to real life. The SAT / ACT course was very helpful, I don’t think I would’ve improved my reading skills without it. This course also gave me strategies to break down a reading. I got a feel for the SAT and had practice in areas I struggled in.

Meet a Chapel Hill SAT Tutor: Domenic E.
Domenic E. grew up in Nova Scotia and moved to Salt Lake City at a young age. "I was so sad to leave my friends and extended family," he recalls, "and one of the ways I coped with such an enormous change was through art." Domenic discovered a love of drawing and painting when he was just a child, and he derived endless enjoyment from creating his own comic books, telling stories illustrated with colorful artwork, and imagining a variety of make-believe characters each with a unique backstory. "I was a pretty shy kid," shares Domenic, "but my parents signed me up for art classes shortly after we moved, and that was a great way to make new friends. We didn't really have to talk about ourselves, we could just focus on our art…which eventually led to us being comfortable enough to talk about ourselves." As he grew older, Domenic began using various graphic design programs on his computer, although he never outgrew his love of drawing and illustrating by hand. "Using a computer just opened up so many new options," he explained. "It was incredible to see things come to life when before, they'd only existed in my mind."
Domenic dreamed of becoming a professional artist and set his sights on attending the Rhode Island School of Design, respected around the world for producing leaders in the fields of graphic design, illustration, and other forms of art. "I knew being accepted into such a prestigious program would be like getting into Harvard or Duke," shares Domenic, "so I wanted to make use of all the available help I could. One of the best ways to make my application stand out was to have a really high SAT score, which would also help me be competitive for scholarships." Domenic worked with a private tutor, learning how to approach test questions and select the most effective strategy for arriving at the best answer. He took countless practice tests, familiarizing himself with time management and pacing skills, as well as the content he would be expected to know. "After working with my tutor, I was much more prepared than I ever could have been on my own, and on the day of the real test, I didn't panic or feel overwhelmed… I wasn't even surprised by anything." Domenic's hard work and diligence paid off, and he obtained a near-perfect SAT score, earning himself a place at the undergraduate program of his dreams, as well as numerous financial aid awards.
After graduating from the Rhode Island School of Design, Domenic lived in New York City for a few years until his wife received a promotion in her company that required them to relocate to Chapel Hill. "I'd built up a pretty good client portfolio," smiles Domenic, "and in addition to doing some freelance work, I hoped I'd find a chance to do some teaching, since I'd done it to complete my required student teaching hours and discovered I really loved it." In Chapel Hill, Domenic found a position teaching art in an after-school program, and while working with the high school students, he found himself discussing the SAT, particularly the tips and tricks he'd used to obtain a high score. Domenic ultimately went on to obtain a master's degree in education from UNC Chapel Hill, and when a position for an SAT tutor opened at the Chapel Hill office of Manhattan Review, we were thrilled to welcome him to the team. Students love Domenic's laid-back approach to mastering test-taking strategies, as well as his ability to diffuse the stress of studying for the SAT. When he isn't helping future college students master the SAT, Domenic can be found skateboarding, volunteering at the local animal rescue shelter, and taking photography classes with his wife.
