When it comes to preparing for an important exam, no students learn in exactly the same way. Many students do quite well learning in the company of others, finding their comments and questions insightful and helpful when mastering complex material. Other students, however, do not perform to their full potential when learning in a large group…they worry they are not grasping information as quickly as others and fear holding the group back. The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100.

Meet a Beijing TOEFL Tutor: Sandeep V.

Sandeep was born in Bengaluru, India, and lived there for the first eleven years of his life. "I grew up fortunate to learn English along with Hindi, and I always found English more challenging," he recalls with a laugh. When Sandeep's father accepted a job as a software engineer in Silicon Valley, California, Sandeep was nervous about the move but also excited "because California was home to Disneyland, and I thought we'd visit every day." Sandeep was an outgoing and friendly student who quickly became an active participant in his high school's speech and debate team, as well as drama club and the soccer team. When he struggled to master certain aspects of trigonometry, his parents found him a private tutor who helped him not only learn the math but also helped boost his self-esteem, as he realized that he could master even the most challenging material with hard work and the proper instruction.

Sandeep graduated at the top of his class and while his parents were not entirely thrilled to see him move across the country, they were excited when he was accepted to Princeton University. Sandeep loved having the chance to see more of the United States while making new friends. He majored in linguistics, seeking to understand systems of language as thoroughly as possible in order to help others master the English language as he had. "It's almost understood that the English language is an important factor in being successful in today's global economy," he shares. "But so many people, many of my own family members included, never had the opportunity to learn the language, and that kept them from being as successful as they otherwise could have been."

After graduating from Princeton, Sandeep moved to New York City where he obtained a master's in teaching from Columbia University, followed by a TESOL certificate from New York University. Sandeep accepted a position with a non-profit organization working with immigrant teens and young adults to improve their English-speaking abilities, and he was incredibly passionate about his work. After a few years, Sandeep was contacted by a larger corporation providing English language instruction to students in Beijing, and he jumped at the chance to experience life in a new country. Sandeep developed a reputation as a dedicated and effective instructor in the Beijing area, and when he connected with Manhattan Review at an educational networking event, it was a perfect match. Sandeep has been with Manhattan Review since 2016, and his students' feedback consistently praises his patience, his ability to provide memorable examples, and his excitement when they master something that had previously been difficult. When he isn't guiding students to their own TOEFL success, Sandeep enjoys learning to sail, going to the theater and comedy shows with friends, and visiting his aunts, uncles, and extended family back in India.
