When it comes to preparing for a standardized test such as the TOEFL, many students enjoy learning in the company of others, finding their peers' questions and comments insightful and inspiring. Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their full potential when attempting to learn in a classroom-style group setting. They worry they are holding the group back, keeping everyone from moving on because they need additional time to master a particular concept. Alternatively, some students in groups experience frustration because even though they have mastered a concept, they cannot move on until the rest of the group catches up, leaving them bored and unmotivated. If you know you learn best through customized instruction and personalized feedback, consider working with one of Manhattan Review's knowledgeable and dedicated private tutors.

The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100.

TOEFL Prep Course Chapel Hill - Photo of Student Mirco

My classes with Mr. Scheno were perfect to prepare for the actual TOEFL test – I can give my total recommendation for attending his classes. During our first appopintment he analyzed my strengths and weaknesses to set up my personal course syllabus. These customized classes improved my writing, speaking, reading and listening abilities a lot and raised my confidence to succeed the TOEFL test, which I in fact succeeded. At any time, Mr. Scheno responded rapidly and accurately to my questions and was available even beyond classes. It was a great and successfull experience to work with Mr. Scheno. Many thanks!

Meet a Chapel Hill TOEFL Tutor: Sahil V.

Sahil V. was born in Mumbai, India, and lived there for the first thirteen years of his life. "I was very fortunate to learn English alongside Hindi," he shares, "and honestly, I always thought Hindi was easier." When Sahil's father accepted a job with a large tech company in San Francisco, California, Sahil was anxious about moving away from everyone he knew, including his beloved extended family. "I've always been a little on the introverted side, so the idea of moving someplace where I didn't know a single person aside from my immediate family members was incredibly scary," he admits. Sahil's parents signed him up for a variety of activities shortly after they moved to help him make friends while also exploring his interests, and Sahil especially enjoyed learning how to code. He even began creating his own apps and while "they weren't anything fancy, it was so much fun to see something I'd thought up in my head actually being available for others to use," he smiles. Sahil soon made new friends and settled into his new school, and when he struggled to master certain aspects of algebra, his parents found him a private tutor who helped him learn the material while also showing him that any problem could be mastered through the proper instruction and application of knowledge.

Sahil graduated near the top of his competitive high school class and thanks to his impressive grades and extracurricular activities, in addition to a stellar SAT score, he was accepted at multiple colleges across the United States. Even though it meant not leaving the Bay Area, Sahil chose to attend Stanford University, where he majored in computer science and minored in English. "I knew from personal experience how important a thorough knowledge of the English language was to academic and professional success, and I thought there might be a way to combine my love of technology with my desire to help others improve their own futures," shares Sahil. After graduating from Stanford, Sahil moved to Southern California, where he completed a master's degree in computer science, as well as a TESOL certificate, at the University of Southern California.

Sahil ultimately accepted a position with an international non-profit organization focused on improving youth access to technology, and as part of teaching children to code and create online resources, such as apps, Sahil also had the opportunity to help them learn English. He loved combining his two passions, and he traveled around the world for more than a decade, living and working in Bali, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South Korea, and Hong Kong. After a while, however, he decided he wanted to remain in one location for more than a year or two, and he switched to an administrative position in his company, which allowed him to move back to the United States. He relocated to Chapel Hill and when a rare position at the local Manhattan Review office opened, we were thrilled to welcome Sahil to the team. He quickly developed a reputation as a dedicated and effective instructor whose classes fill up almost as quickly as they are announced. Sahil's students appreciate his real-life experiences almost as much as they appreciate his patient approach to helping them master the intricacies of the English language. When Sahil isn't preparing the next generation of future college students for their own success, he can be found creating app-based programs to help those in remote areas learn English, visiting local dive bars with friends, and hosting a weekly children's reading program at the library.
