The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100.

Students in Flushing understand the importance of attending a prestigious college. There are always more college applications received than there are available spots for members of the incoming freshman class, and it is imperative to make your application stand out. The most influential colleges and universities are highly selective, and in order to warrant an offer of admission, you will need to demonstrate an impressive performance on the TOEFL if English is not your native language. Our tutors are here to support your academic journey, and we are honored to play a role in ensuring your undergraduate success.

Meet a Flushing TOEFL Tutor: Roberto F.
While Roberto was born in upstate New York, his family has always maintained strong ties to their home country of Italy. Roberto spent most school vacations and summers outside of Naples with grandparents and cousins, and he was grateful his parents insisted he learn Italian, as well as English. Roberto developed a love of the environment and nature from an early age ("probably all those summers playing outside on my grandparents' farm," he smiles), and as early as middle school, he recalls wanting to find ways to make the world a better, and cleaner, place. "I was very big on recycling as a child," he shares. "When I learned how much plastic ends up in the ocean and how it destroys marine life, I was devasted but determined to do something about it."
Roberto worked hard during high school, never losing his love of the ocean, and he dreamed of combining this love with practical, effective changes to plastic usage and manufacturing. Roberto completed his undergraduate work at the University of California at Santa Cruz, studying marine biology and learning about the dynamic relationships between people and oceanic life. He then attended and graduated from CalTech, studying mechanical design, industrial technology, and mechanical engineering. Roberto ultimately accepted a job in New York City as an environmental consultant, working with large corporations on reducing plastic usage and helping to create products that will naturally decay in increasingly shorter periods of time.
Roberto came to work as a private tutor at Manhattan Review in 2015, not long after he received a TESOL certificate from New York University, seeking a way to help the next generation of enterprising college students. "I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't worked with amazing instructors who took the time to ensure I really understood the material they were teaching," he says. "The more people know, the more informed their choices can be, and I want to be a part of educating the leaders of tomorrow." Roberto is always in high demand as an instructor, and his students appreciate that he is both highly knowledgeable while also patient and approachable. Fluent in two languages, he is an expert guide through the complexities of the TOEFL. When he isn't saving the planet or preparing future undergraduate students, he can be found visiting the local aquarium, writing articles for such esteemed publications such as National Geographic, and learning to take wildlife photos with his new camera.
