When it comes to preparing for a test as important as the TOEFL, many students enjoy learning in the company of others, finding their peers' questions and comments insightful and inspiring. Other students, however, know that they do not perform to their full potential when attempting to learn in a classroom-style group setting. The TOEFL is a standardized test designed to measure the English language abilities of non-native speakers seeking to enroll in an English-speaking university. This test is accepted worldwide by over 11,000 universities in more than 190 countries. The TOEFL consists of a group of tests, the most popular of which are the TOEFL iBT and the TOEFL Essentials. The TOEFL iBT requires 90 minutes to complete, whereas the TOEFL Essentials is more rigorous and requires three hours to complete. The TOEFL is composed of four sections—reading, listening, speaking, and writing. A score on the iBT version of the test will fall in the range of 0 to 120, while a score on the Essentials version of the test will range from 0 to 12. Many universities require proof of English language proficiency, and the most selective universities expect to see a TOEFL iBT score over 100.

Meet a Honolulu TOEFL Tutor: Aarush R.
Aarush R. was born in Chennai, India, and lived there for the first fourteen years of his life. "I was incredibly fortunate to learn English alongside Hindi," he shares, "and to be honest, I always found English much more challenging." When Aarush's father accepted a new job as a software engineer with a large tech company in San Francisco, Aarush was devastated to leave his grandparents and large extended family behind. "I've always been a little on the introverted side," he shares, "so the idea of moving to a place where I didn't know anyone outside of my parents and siblings while only speaking conversational English was more than a little scary." To help him adjust to his new home, Aarush's parents signed him up for a variety of activities, hoping he would make new friends. With time, Aarush settled into his new school, and when he struggled to master certain aspects of geometry, his parents found him a private tutor who helped him learn the material while also showing him that any problem could be mastered through proper instruction and the application of knowledge. Aarush also enjoyed the opportunity to practice his English with his tutor and quickly became more confident speaking and reading in this admittedly challenging language.
Aarush graduated near the top of his competitive high school class and thanks to his impressive grades and extracurricular activities, in addition to a stellar SAT score, he was accepted at multiple colleges across the United States. Aarush chose to attend the University of California at Los Angeles, where he majored in computer science and minored in English. "I knew from personal experience how important a thorough knowledge of the English language was to academic and professional success, and I thought there might be a way to combine my love of technology with my desire to help others improve their own futures," explains Aarush. After graduating from UCLA, Aarush went on to obtain a master's degree in computer science, as well as a TESOL certificate, from the University of Southern California.
Aarush ultimately accepted a position with a respected international non-profit organization focused on improving youth access to technology, and as part of teaching children to code and create online resources, such as apps, Aarush also had the opportunity to help them learn English. He loved combining his two passions, and he traveled around the world for more than a decade, living and working in Bali, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, South Korea, India, and Hong Kong. After a while, however, he decided he wanted to put down roots and start a family, and he switched to an administrative position in his company, which allowed him to settle in Honolulu. When a rare position for a private tutor opened up at the local Manhattan Review office, we were thrilled to welcome Aarush to the team. He quickly developed a reputation as a dedicated and effective instructor whose classes fill up almost as quickly as they are announced. Aarush's students appreciate his real-life experiences almost as much as they appreciate his patient approach to helping them master the intricacies of the English language. When Aarush isn't preparing future college students for their own success, he can be found creating app-based programs to help children in remote areas learn English, hosting a weekly teen book club at the local library, and trying out new restaurants with his wife and young son.
