The TOEFL is a four-part exam that has individual sections on reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The exam is scored from 0 to 30 on each section, for a total score of 0 to 120. Some universities have minimum requirements for the total score only, while others require minimum scores with respect to specific TOEFL sections. The University of California-Los Angeles, for example, has a broad standard of 87 (total score) for admission to any graduate program. Specific graduate programs at UCLA may have higher TOEFL students, but no graduate student will be allowed to begin his or her program without achieving the above total score. Students seeking graduate admission to the Department of Economics at Yale University must score at least 26 each on TOEFL reading, writing, and listening and at least 22 on TOEFL writing. Prospective undergraduate or graduate students taking the TOEFL must be sure to carefully review the score expectations of their chosen programs, and Manhattan Review's student support staff will be happy to help if necessary.
